Review: Not much has changed at Ah So – and that’s a good thing

I was giving my son a ride to his gym the other day and got stopped at the light at Lincoln and Oliver. When I glanced to my right, I noticed Ah So, and memories from the early ’80s came flooding back. After I realized how lucky I was to have survived that era, I remembered eating at Ah So a lot and enjoying it tremendously. I made a mental note to return soon to see if it had changed at all.

Luckily, it had not.

ON THE MENU: Ah So serves your basic Chinese fare – lo mein, fried rice, sweet and sours, and all the dishes you’d expect to find. Translation: There’s nothing new and exciting, but that’s not always a bad thing.

DON’T-MISS DISHES: We ordered egg rolls, crab Rangoon and butterfly shrimp for our appetizer. All were very good, particularly the egg rolls, which were tasty and not greasy. For the main course, we ordered the almond chicken, the Kung Pao chicken, beef and broccoli, and the shrimp with snow peas. The almond chicken was a little heavy on the soy sauce but was not overcooked and was very good. My husband ordered the Kung Pao Hot, which was pretty spicy.

The beef and broccoli was cooked perfectly. The shrimp had the right texture, and the veggies were crisp. All of our meals came as combos and included fried rice and two triangle-shaped egg rolls called mandu. (Say that without grinning, I dare you.) We were too full for dessert, which was almond cookies that were 25 cents each.

AMBIENCE: The dining room is small and holds four four-tops and six two-tops. The menus are under the glass on the tables, which I find very retro. You can see into the kitchen, and the first thing you notice is the enormous woks they cook the food in. (I like to see where my food is prepared and am sneaky about this in bigger restaurants.)

PRICE RANGE: The combo meals range from $6.45 to $7.35. The servings are very generous, and we all had doggy bags. The sides were reasonable, too. The mandu were 95 cents each on the less expensive end, and the egg rolls came four to an order for $5.50. This was the most expensive side.

SERVICE: After we sat down, a friendly waitress took our order and the sides came out in reasonable time. The dinners were served shortly thereafter with no problems. After the meal, the woman who prepared our dinners came out to make sure we were happy – a very nice touch, in my opinion.
