Diners are always eager to share their complaints about bad restaurant service: inattentive wait staff, plates snatched away prematurely, food that never comes.
But there’s another side to the story. As a few recent memes have reminded us, waiters and kitchen staffs have just as many complaints about their customers, though it’s not as kosher to air them.
My favorite recent meme is a video made by comedy channel Above Average called “The Real Reason Your Food Takes So Long.” It shows a flustered chef in a busy restaurant kitchen. A stream of servers comes in, one by one, to report the behavior of their tables. As he gets each report, the enraged chef moves table numbers around on a board that determines who must wait longest for their food.
I want to hear from Wichita waiters, waitresses and kitchen staff about the most annoying things local customers do. I also want to hear specific stories about poor customer behavior. The more appalling, the better.
If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your name in publication, I understand. Just e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org, share your thought or story, and I’ll keep your identity confidential. If you’re brave enough to share in public, go to my Dining with Denise Facebook page and do it.
I’ll compile the responses I get and publish them to serve as a guide for conscientious diners about better restaurant behavior.
It’s a public service, and if giving servers this platform makes my food start coming out faster, well, so be it.
