In a little more than two weeks, Girl Scouts across the state will get the green light to start their annual Girl Scout Cookie sale. And in Wichita, they’ll have a new flavor to hawk.
Trios, a new gluten-free cookie, are being added to the list of offerings in Wichita this year. They’re peanut butter oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips, and they’ll sell for $4 a package. (All cookie varieties this year will be $4, a 50-cent increase over last year’s price.)
The Girl Scouts let me sample the Trios early, and I liked them. Generally, I’m not big on gluten-free baked goods. I usually can tell there’s something missing, and my idea of a perfect gluten-free meal is a steak and baked potato.
But if I did have to adopt a gluten-free diet, these cookies would be a good option. The come in a resealable pouch rather than a box, and each cookie is relatively small – about two inches round. They’re irregular, like homemade cookies, and some are a bit misshapen or have more or fewer chocolate chips than their neighbors. But the three star ingredients – oats, chocolate chips and peanut butter – historically work well together, and they do here, too. Three cookies have 170 calories and 8 grams of fat.
An Eagle co-worker who has a strict gluten-free diet agreed with my take. He thought the Trios were a little dry but noted that most gluten-free cookies are. He liked the flavor, though, and said he’s likely to buy a package or more if he’s approached by a Girl Scout this year.
Don’t get any ideas, though, young business women. The Eagle already has several Girl Scout families ready to serve him.
Other flavors that will be available in Wichita when the sale starts: Shortbreads, Peanut Butter Patties, Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Caramel deLites, Cranberry Citrus Crisps, Thanks-A-Lots and Lemonades. The sale will continue through March 8, and booth sales will begin in local grocery stores and retailers on Feb. 13.
