Wichita’s new Hibachi Boy, a fast Asian food place owned by Roung Kumgool and her husband, Philip Sayavong, opened Wednesday in a strip center at 601 S. Greenwich.
The original Hibachi Boy is at 1220 N. Rock Road in Derby and serves a menu that looks a lot like the one that Kumgool used to serve at her Gindi Thai & Japanese Diner, a restaurant in the former Back Yard Burgers space at 7010 W 21st St. N. that I loved.
That restaurant closed in 2012, and Kumgool opened Dawn Thai & Sushi Bar in Derby. In 2013, she turned Dawn Thai into Hibachi Boy.
Hibachi Boy’s large menu features egg rolls, Crab Rangoon, pot stickers, pho noodle soup, pad Thai, hibachi fried rice and entrees and several sushi rolls. Prices range from $5 to $8.
Kumgool plans to open a west-side Hibachi Boy restaurant next year.
It’ll be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Kumgool said that while she was remodeling the space, she noticed many cars she assumes were being driven by nearby aircraft workers pass by late at night. She’s hoping to pick up some business from them.
The dining room has seats for about 100, and carryout also is available. People can call-ahead to place orders then pick up their food at a drive-through window, but customers can’t place orders at the window.
