Birds on the Roof Cafe at 550 N. Rock Road has been open for a year, but it’s been a tough one, said owner Jimmy Nguyen.

He and his wife, Thao Luu, have experienced many difficulties, he said, from construction problems to staffing issues. They had a few bad reviews from customers early on that they’ve been unable to recover from.

“We have been through a lot since the opening of our restaurant,” he said. “It has been a year since our opening and we still have not been able to reach the break-even point,”

Nguyen said the couple is giving the restaurant one more month and if things don’t improve, they’re going to close for good.

In an attempt to lure customers, they’re marking their one-year anniversary this week and into the weekend with several specials.

Now through Sunday, customers will get 15 percent off all breakfast and lunch items plus a free anniversary cookie. Dinner items will be 20 percent off and customers will get a free dessert.

Also, the restaurant is offering a dinner special that features 8-oz. filet mignon with choice of potato and vegetable for $12.
