Having moved to Wichita in 1952, I have had the distinct privilege of eating in some of Wichita’s most notorious burger joints — Big Bun and the original Kings X to name a couple. When I saw that a new Walt’s had opened in Wichita, I had to give it a try. Having been a long-time Walt’s fan, I could not wait.

The newest Walt’s is located in what was a short-lived attempt at gourmet burgers called Smashburger at 3570 N. Woodlawn.

My wife and I found the place had not changed much from the Smashburger decor. Sports memorabilia now adorn the walls, but the booths and service counter had not changed.

I was thrilled to see that they were offering a version of the Walt’s classic burger with the pickle onion relish. We settled on a Walt’s classic ($5.99) and a Sonoran Dog ($5.99). We had heard that the prices were a little steep, but when we learned that diners get a choice of a large order of hand-cut fries, handmade chips or coleslaw (or substitute onion rings for an additional $1), we did not consider Walt’s pricey at all.

As a hot dog junkie, I considered the quality of all-beef hot dog at Walt’s next to none in Wichita. It was wrapped in bacon and grilled to perfection. Then they added pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, mustard, mayo and a jalapeno sauce and served it on a fresh-baked Italian-style roll. The onion rings were sweet, juicy and lightly breaded — I would rank them among the best in Wichita. The Walt’s classic was great, but I would have preferred a juicer burger.

We can’t wait to try the hand-battered chicken strips and dip them in the honey-lime-jalapeno sauce.
