Newport Grill is the new upscale seafood restaurant owned by PB&J Restaurants — the same people who own Yia Yia's Eurobistro. It opened on Monday and allowed The Eagle's On the Town with Carrie & Denise to stage a gathering of foodies there. It drew 130 people and raised $1,316 for the Kansas Food Bank. A peek at the menu:
1. Appetizers: They range from $8 for a plate of marinated ricotta and olives to $15 for jumbo lump crab cakes. Also available — steak tartar ($9), Belgian-style mussels ($10), duck confit ($14) and more.
2. Seafood entrees: Six choices included seared scallops ($29), trout amandine ($18), seared ahi tuna ($27) and a popular grilled mahi mahi, served with fresh coconut pastina, carrot and snow pea slaw and a mango emulsion for $19.
3. Non-seafood entrees: Among the dishes non-fish eaters can choose from: A grilled filet mignon ($31 for an 8-oz., $39 for a 12-oz.), a slow roasted pork loin for $21 and a dish called "the chicken and the egg," made with breast of organic chicken, a sunny-side-up egg, wild mushroom and crispy potato hash, and a caramelized onion Madeira jus.
Pei Wei food drive
Pei Wei Asian Diner at 2441 N. Maize Road will put on a holiday food drive on Wednesday and Thursday and is asking customers to bring a nonperishable food item to the restaurant. Those who do will receive 25 percent off an entree of their choice. All food items will be donated to a local food bank.
Bangers and mushy peas
Delano is becoming quite the dining destination lately, and soon, it'll also offer food from "across the pond." Pete White plans to open British Banger Company at 1713 W. Douglas, across from the Shamrock, on Jan. 5. He'll serve British meals to-go: Bangers and mash, cottage pie, beef and potato pie, and cheese and onion bake. Three sides will be available — mushy peas, curry beans and Irish cabbage. He'll also sell bangers and whole pies frozen in the shop. White used to operate a British pie bakery in Riverside, but when Minisa Bridge closed, he had to shut down. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
