Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

At 49, this grandmother is trying to provide a better future for her two grandchildren, 12 and 10. Her daughter, their mother, died in a car accident three years ago. Their father died years ago.

The grandmother spent all her savings on her daughter’s funeral and on a successful court fight to gain custody of the children.

Her granddaughter was diagnosed with shaken-baby syndrome at five weeks. Though she is now a seventh-grader, her brain functions at the level of a first-grader, the grandmother said.

Her grandson was a mama’s boy, she said, and is having a hard time dealing with the loss of his mother. “His little heart is broken,” she said. “He tries to cover up that pain with laughter. He is a big-hearted kid.”

The children have needed medical attention and therapy.

The woman’s husband works in lawn care and heat affected his earning ability over the summer, so the couple has fallen behind on bills. The woman needs new tires for her car, as well as other things.

“I know that my problems are nowhere near as tragic as some folks’ ” she wrote. “… if you can find a donor to help us just this one time, that we would be the most grateful little family in the world.”

She is asking not only Share the Season, but the community in general, to help her find a lawyer who could either waive the adoption fee for her grandchildren or put it on a payment plan. “I could finally adopt my kids. It would make my day, make my week, make my life.”
