Three restaurants influenced by moms

In honor of Mother's Day this Sunday, we recognize three restaurants with strong mother figures.

1. Old Mill Tasty Shop: 604 E. Douglas, 316-264-6500. Owner Mary Wright, mother of co-owner Don Wright, is a regular fixture in the restaurant.

2. Connie's Mexico Cafe: 2227 N. Broadway, 316-832-9636. Connie Lopez helped start this family-run Mexican cafe in the 1960s, eventually passing it to her only daughter, Carmen. Carmen's five daughters also worked in the restaurant and help run it today.

3. El GauchoSteakhouse, 8550 W. 21st St. N., 316-440-4030. Co-owner Monica Sacco is somehow able to manage her new Latin steakhouse and her brood of five children, ranging in age from preschooler to teenager.

A GOOD DEAL

Savute's Italian Restaurant at 3303 N Broadway (316-838-0455) will offer a Mother's Day special featuring a combination plate with eggplant Parmesan rollett, spaghetti & meatball and chicken scaloppini. The plate is $12.99 and is being offered from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. tonight, Saturday and Sunday.

QUICK BITES

Other Mother specials

They're not serving buffets, but several other local restaurants are adding special touches on Sunday, Mother's Day. Chester's Chophouse at 1550 N. Webb Road will deliver along with the bill chocolate-dipped long-stem strawberries injected with a shot of Grand Marnier. That lasts from 4 to 8 p.m. And Abuelo's at 1413 Waterfront Parkway, open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., will give away special Mother's Day T-shirts and discount coupons good for use in June and July.

Another positive plate

The Pita Pit at 328 N. Rock Road (316-683-7482) is the latest winner of the Positive Plate Award, an honor created by local dietitians to highlight restaurants that "make healthy eating easy and delicious by following dietary guidelines." The group of dietitians awarded the restaurant's whole-grain pita served with choice of fresh vegetables and grilled meats.
