Eighth Day Books will celebrate its 25-year anniversary in Wichita on Friday and Saturday with author readings and the release of “Timely . . . Timeless: 25 Years at Eighth Day Books,” a collection of tributes to the bookstore from 30 writers and poets. The book will go on sale Friday at the store, 2838 E. Douglas.

Also on Friday, Hillsboro native Jessica Penner will read from “Shaken in the Water,” followed by a book signing. Penner sets her new novel in western Kansas, where a Mennonite woman gives birth to a daughter in 1903. The child bears a birthmark known in Low German as Tieja Kjoaw, the Tiger’s Scar, which portends either greatness or tragedy.

Penner, who grew up in Hillsboro, now lives in Virginia. Her essay “Mustard Seed” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2012.

On Saturday, more than a dozen local authors will read from “Timely . . . Timeless.” Both events begin at 7 p.m. and include refreshments.

Among the contributors to the anniversary collection are former Kansas Poet Laureate Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, University of Missouri professor Scott Cairns, and several Wichita writers. Newbery Medal winner Clare Vanderpool will headline Saturday’s reading.

“Timely . . . Timeless” also features an essay on the store’s founding by owner Warren Farha, who began selling classics in religion, literature and history in 1988. Twenty-five years later, Eighth Day Books is recognized as “one of the best religious bookstores in the country,” according to Publisher’s Weekly.
