Wichita Grand Opera announces winners of coloring book contest

The Wichita Grand Opera has announced the winners of its first coloring book contest for students ages 6 to 12.
The coloring book, which was distributed to music and art teachers in the Wichita area, featured scenes from the five productions of Wichita Grand Opera’s 2014 season: “Sleeping Beauty,” “William Tell,” “Tosca,” “Don Quixote” and “The Barber of Seville.”
Entries were separated into three age groups and prizes awarded to the top three entries in each division. Here are the winners:
First place: Lex Oswald, Wichita Collegiate School; Julia Douglas, The Independent School; and Ashby Schwanz, The Independent School. Second place: Dannia Gandara, Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet; Emma Jane Stallbaumer, St. Catherine of Siena; and Kaitlyn Greenman, Peppertree Academy Home School. Third place: Yuan Zhao, Horace Mann; Mallory Nesbitt, Beech Elementary; and Hannah Griffin, Home School. Honorable mentions: Rosalinda Lucero, Beech; Madison Ivy, Beech; and Almas Zafar, Annoor Islamic School.
The winners’ artwork will be displayed in the Century II lobby through April. The winning students will receive awards on the Concert Hall stage before the Wichita Grand Opera’s premiere of “William Tell” on Feb. 22.
On Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at CityArts, 334 N. Mead, children are invited to make three “William Tell”-themed crafts and hear the story of William Tell. On the day of the performance, Feb. 22, CityArts instructors will offer free “opera mask” face painting in the Century II lobby from 5:30 to 6:40 p.m.
