Broadway will come to Wichita with a bang next season.

The Theater League has announced its 2012-2013 lineup, which includes “The Lion King,” “Jersey Boys,” “Dreamgirls” and “Rock of Ages.”

“This is the most historical theater series in my career of 35 years,” said Mark Edelman, president of Theater League. “With all four shows being so well known, and three of the four being available for viewing still on Broadway, you can have the same exact experience in Wichita as you would on Broadway.”

Founded in 1976, the Theater League brings national Broadway tours and professional touring productions to eight cities, including Wichita and Kansas City. The League’s production of “Young Frankenstein” opens in Wichita on Thursday.

“The Lion King,” which roars to the stage Sept. 4 through 30, features unique costumes with the original score. The entire savannah comes to life as 40 actors tell the story of the lion Simba as he fights for his home and his life. The show, a staple of Broadway since 1997, is making its Wichita premiere.

Remodeling to the Century II Concert Hall has made it possible to accommodate the massive production’s needs.

“We removed the ‘dog houses,’ stairs that came down from the stage to the main floor, to allow for more stage space,” said Jacob House, sales and communication manager at Century II. “Removable chairs have been added to areas of the aisles needed for the show’s animal parade.”

The League’s second show, “Rock of Ages,” premieres in Wichita Nov. 27 through 29. The five-time Tony winner is a musical comedy filled with love based on the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing.” The musical score includes rock hits from 1980s artists such as Poison, Styx, Twisted Sister and more.

“Jersey Boys” will run Jan. 29 through Feb. 10, 2013. It tells the tale of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, who went from blue-collar kids to the creators of one of the greatest groups in pop music history, The Four Seasons.

The League ends its season with the production “Dreamgirls,” March 19 through 21. The show takes you into the lives of a 1960s Motown girl group, “The Dream,” as it climbs the ladder to fame and fortune.

Season tickets for all four shows start at $135 and can be purchased by calling 316-219-4849 or by visiting the Wichita Tix box office at Century II, 225 W. Douglas.

Individual ticket prices will be announced at a later date.
