Celebrate the arrival of spring with a plethora of Easter activities taking place in Wichita this weekend. Egg hunters are encouraged to bring their own baskets for each hunt.
Easter concert at Bartlett Arboretum
A jazz trio featuring Kentucky White and Shelby and Nathan Eicher will perform among the tulips, lilacs and more as the flowers come into bloom for the spring.

Easter Sun Run

Easter Eggstravaganza
The Sedgwick County Zoo has loads of activities in store for the little ones. They can meet the Easter Bunny, participate in games and count giant eggs around the zoo, winning a prize if they count correctly. The zoo is sponsoring activities for special-needs children at 1 p.m. and for visually impaired children at 2 p.m.

Derby Egg Hunts
Derby residents who don’t want to make their way into Wichita for an egg hunt are in luck, as there are three free egg hunts in town on Saturday.
At the Aviator Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Aviator Church, kids can bounce on inflatables and take pictures with the Easter Bunny. Kids in fifth grade and younger are invited to participate.
The Derby Recreation Commission and the Derby Optimist Club will hide candy and host the Easter Bunny for kids up to age 10 at their events at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell at the Fox
Embrace the sound of folk as Patty Griffin (pictured), Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell share the stage at Hutchinson’s Fox Theatre on Saturday. The individual members of the trio share several Grammy Awards and nominations among them. Now, the three will put on a folksy performance together for your listening pleasure.

Congressional Art Competition at CityArts
Wichita’s monthly Final Friday arts showcase is this week, and one of the bigger events is the opening ceremony for the Congressional Art Competition at CityArts. High school students from the 4th District have submitted their artwork for judgment by a committee selected by Congressman Mike Pompeo. The artwork is publicly viewable until April 24, and there will be a people’s choice vote for individual pieces to go along with the committee’s decision.

Carillon Concert at Historical Museum
Bell ringer David Childs will perform in the latest edition of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum’s carillon concert series. The carillon is a complex set of large bells. Listeners are encouraged to stand outside (or sit in their cars in nearby parking lots) and hear the music as it emanates from the museum’s tower.

Zephyr-Sphere Opening Reception
Another Final Friday attraction this week is the opening of the Zephyr-Sphere installation at Diver Studio. This unique art show features works that channel the power of wind by Wichita artists Mike Miller, Hallie Linnebur and Meghan Miller. Many of the pieces require the kinetic power of wind to function and are interactive, so fans of unconventional art should check this one out.

Iranian New Year celebration at Holiday Inn
Whether you love learning about other cultures or you’re just wild about celebrations, the Nowruz event being held in Wichita on Saturday is the place to be. Nowruz is the Iranian spring festival that traditionally kicks off the new year, and this promises to be the biggest Nowruz celebration ever held in Kansas, with Iranian foods and live music from performer Farzam Fattahi. All nationalities are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Friends Tower Wind Quintet performance
A woodwind quintet featuring Friends University faculty members will perform Monday at Sebits Auditorium on the university campus. The 15th annual recital will feature works by composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Malcolm Arnold.

Tulips, Fairies and Forts at Botanica
60,000 tulips is an incomprehensible number of tulips, but the horticultural wizards at Botanica have made it a reality and you’re invited to participate in activities among the tulips. Build your own fairy house out of twigs, pine cones and other items found in nature and take it to Botanica for a chance to win prizes. There will be performers and a bounce house, and kids can make a fairy wand or build their own flowers.

J.R. Brow at the Loony Bin
A self-described “comedy composer,” J.R. Brow has made a career out of combining comedy with song. He incorporates his guitar into his routine in such a way that he’s risen through the comedy ranks and opened for heavyweights like Ray Romano and Bill Hicks, as well appearing on television shows.
