When The Naked Magicians bill themselves as naked, they’re being literal. They’re not bearing naked their magical souls or demonstrating some brand of back-to-the-basics magic.
They’re naked. As in nude.
But fortunately (depending on where you stand on male nudity), they’re not as naked in the United States as they are in Europe and Asia, where laws are much more relaxed.
By the time Australian entertainers Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne, aka The Naked Magicians, leave the Cotillion stage on Friday, they’ll be completely naked, but their most private parts will remain obscured – though barely.
Never miss a local story.
“We’re in America, so we need to keep our magic wands covered, so to speak,” Tyler said during a recent phone interview. “But we do live up to the name ‘The Naked Magicians.’ We do get completely naked by the end of the show.”
The show, which Tyler described as a “perfect girls’ night out,” combines the raunchiness of a Chippendales show with the fun of a clothed magic show. The Naked Magicians have adopted the motto “Sleeves up, pants down.”
The duo, both from Brisbane, were working magicians when they became “best mates.” It was in the height of the popularity of “Magic Mike,” the 2012 movie starring Channing Tatum as a male stripper, that the two came up with their idea, which they debuted in 2014.
“We realized that there was no shortage of regular clothed magicians,” Tyler said. “We wanted to create a show that would take magic to an audience that wouldn’t usually attend a magic show.”
The show is strictly R-rated, Tyler said, and it’s as much about comedy as magic. The chiseled performers start off the evening totally clothed; then things progress.
“We slowly build our way into it. We don’t get naked straight away,” he said. “But we guarantee that we are fully naked by the end of the show.”
