Weekend events: Ape Awareness, world’s largest swimming lesson, coin and stamp show

Ape Awareness at zoo
The Sedgwick County Zoo is focusing attention on its ape population this weekend with a special event designed to teach visitors more about gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees. Ape Awareness Weekend lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and will include a series of zookeeper chats and ape-related activities. Zoo admission is $13.95, or $11.95 for ages 62 and older, $8.96 for ages 3 to 11, free for members and ages 2 and under. For more information, visit www.scz.org.
World’s largest swimming lesson
Rock River Rapids, the water park in Derby, will join aquatic centers across the world on Friday morning in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of 23,000 people involved in the world’s largest swimming lesson. The event is designed to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim. People must register by 9:30 a.m. to be a part of the event, which lasts from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and will include a basic swim lesson. Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages. The venue opens for the day at 12:30 p.m, when regular admission will be required. For more information, call 316-788-3781.
Coin and stamp show
The 31st annual Kansas Numismatic Association Coin & Stamp Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Cessna Activity Center, 2744 George Washington Blvd. This year’s show will feature local and regional dealers and an appearance by Dennis Boggs, who portrays Abraham Lincoln.
