You can trip the light fantastic in more ways than one to celebrate this New Year’s Eve in Wichita. But make your reservations soon, or you might be stuck at home watching the ball drop on TV.
A Bootlegger’s Ball featuring flapper attire and a Roaring ’20s dance performance is one event being held to ring in 2014, while Botanica Gardens will keep its Illuminations light show glowing until 8:30 p.m. on the last night of the year. Here’s a look at these and other happenings:
Bootlegger’s Ball: The Eaton Venue in the historic Eaton Hotel is the site for the Bootlegger’s Ball (appropriate, considering Carrie Nation once took an ax to its saloon). The $100-per-person ticket provides attendees with a dinner buffet of prime rib and seafood, a live DJ and a champagne toast. Gangster and flapper attire are encouraged, with prizes for best costume. A $300-per-couple package includes a room and shuttle ride to the Hotel Waterwalk. Reservations required, 316-519-7082.
Lucky’s: A different Carrie Nation – the popular local band – will be appearing at Lucky’s, 1217 E. Douglas, with Japanese Gameshow and New Imperialism. The price is $12 for the show or $20 for the show and dinner at Public at the Brickyard (Public is also offering a three-course menu for $35). Tickets are available at Lucky’s and Public.
The Hyatt Regency, 400 W. Waterman, is once again throwing one of the city’s biggest New Year’s Eve parties. Music by Lucky People, a massive buffet dinner for two, parking, a hotel room and late checkout are part of the $259-per-couple ticket (add $30 for breakfast). For reservations, call 316-293-1234 or visit wichita.hyatt.com.
The Drury Plaza Hotel, 400 W. Douglas, is getting into the act with a party sponsored by Wichita Magazine. Dinner and dessert, a midnight champagne toast, live music, dancing and a midnight fireworks display over the Arkansas River are part of the fun. Tickets are $75 per person; call 316-361-0500 for reservations.
Oeno Wine Bar, 330 N. Mead, is offering a dinner buffet, champagne toast and live DJ for $50 per person. Reservations required at 316-440-5000.
Illuminations: For people seeking a little fresh air, Botanica’s annual holiday light display, Illuminations, features synchronized displays of music and lights and more than 200 illuminated trees and sculptures and hot drinks, candy and cookies for sale. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. The event runs 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Madrocks, 1821 E. Madison in Derby, with music by Joe Durt, Wichita’s “hottest hair band.”
Deano’s Grill & Tapworks, 9747 E. 21st St., will present the Erin Alan Project.
