New Year’s Day at the Murdock
Three local bands will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Murdock Theatre, 536 N. Broadway. Alternative indie acts Commonfolk, The Radio Soul and Billy Bloomquist will perform at the event, which is open to all ages. Venue managers are hoping to turn the Murdock into a place that would feature local music on a regular basis. Annual New Year’s Day float
The Arkansas River Coalition will host its sixth annual New Year’s Day float down the Arkansas River starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The group will meet at the south edge of Old Cowtown Museum’s Visitors Center parking lot, west of the Wichita Art Museum on Sim Park Drive. The two-mile trip will end at the Lincoln Street bridge. New Year’s Day races
Wichita will play host to a variety of holiday-themed runs that will end 2013 and begin 2014.
In El Dorado, the Resolution Run 5K will take place starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the El Dorado Downtown Civic Center, 201 E. Central. Participants can carry a beer stein and sample beers along the run for brisk refreshment. Dedicated runners also can take the new year in stride by participating in the Run in the New Year 5K, starting at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at GoRun Wichita, 2350 N. Greenwich. Participants will run along the K-96 bike path and public sidewalks during the race, and end in a heated tent full of food and drinks. Registration for either race at www.gorunyourrace.com is $30 through Monday and $35 the day of the race.
For long-distance runners, GoRun will host the Hangover Half Marathon and 5K runs starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday. They will start at GoRun’s Greenwich store and wind through east Wichita. Registration for the half marathon is $50 through Monday and $60 on race day. Registration for the 5K run, which will start at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, is $30 through Monday and $35 the day of the race.
There’s also Wednesday’s 11th annual Frosty 5K and Family Mile, which begins at the Downtown YMCA, 402 N. Market. The race snakes through downtown and the River Walk. Registration is $30 for the 5K, which starts at 9:30 a.m., and $25 for the one-mile, which starts at 10:15 a.m. To register, visit http://ymcawichita.org.
