Many attractions open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day

As Christmas break with the family wears on and the conversation starts thinning, don’t worry. Several of Wichita’s favorite attractions will keep hours before and after Christmas Day that will help clear out the house. A few even are open on Christmas Day, which is Tuesday.

Here’s a look at some of the places around Wichita that will be open for your cabin fever-busting pleasure all or part of this holiday weekend:

Open on Christmas Day

Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., 316-660-9453: The zoo is open 364 days of the year, closing only for Zoobilee in September. On Christmas Day, the zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $13.95 for adults 12 and up, $11.95 for seniors over 62 and $8.95 for children 3 to 11 years old.

Warren Theatres: Wichita’s Warren Theatres will close after 5 p.m. shows on Christmas Eve but will be open regular hours on Christmas Day. Several new movies, including “Les Miserables” and “Django Unchained,” will be released on Christmas. The IMAX theater at the west location, 9150 W. 21st St., will be showing “The Hobbit.” For show times, visit

Holiday Light displays – Heartspring’s Lights on the Lake, 8700 E. 29th St. North, will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. every day through Christmas Day. The hospitality center – which includes hot chocolate, live music, pictures with Santa and other activities – will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but the drive-through lights will be open. Lights on St. Paul, sponsored by the ARC of Sedgwick County, will be open until Dec. 28. It opens at 5:30 every night and closes at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and is open until 11:55 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Bowling alleys: Several bowling alleys in town will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Among them: The Alley Entertainment Center, 11413 E. 13th St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and 4 to 11 p.m. Christmas Day. Northrock Lanes at 3232 N. Rock Road will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Christmas Eve and 2 to 11 p.m. Christmas Day. West Acres Bowl at 749 N. Ridge Road will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve and 3 p.m. to midnight Christmas Day.

Holiday weekend fun

All Star Adventures, 1010 N. Webb Road, 316-682-3700: All Star Adventures will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, but will be closed on Christmas Day. After Christmas, it will be open regular hours again, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Go-karts operate only when it is over 40 degrees outside.

All Star Sports, 8333 W. 21st St., 316-722-7259: The west-side fun venue will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Christmas Eve and closed Christmas Day. After that, it resumes its regular hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Botanica’s Illuminations, 701 N. Amidon, 316-264-0448: The Christmas light-filled gardens at Botanica will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but will be open every other day until Dec. 30. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for members and veterans, and $5 for youth 3 to 12 years old.

Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean Blvd., 316-660-0600: The science museum is closed on Christmas Day but open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. Regular admission will be charged.

Laser Quest, 2120 N. Woodlawn, 316-652-9500: Laser Quest will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day. Following, it will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 1 to 11 p.m. Friday. Reservations are recommended. Games are $8 apiece.

Wichita Ice Center: Wichita Ice Center will be closed for public ice skating on Christmas Day but is open from noon to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. It will reopen Wednesday with public skates from noon to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 10 p.m. For more information, call the center at 316-337-9199.

Wichita Thunder: The Wichita Thunder will return to action at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Intrust Bank Arena, taking on the Allen Americans. Tickets range from $12 to $32 depending on their location in the arena. They’re available at Select-A-Seat outlets, by calling 316-755-SEAT or at
