Barbara Walters said she will have surgery later this week to replace a faulty heart valve and will take the summer off from "The View" to recuperate.
The television legend made the announcement on the air Monday.
She said she's known about her condition for a while, and decided with her doctors that this is the best time to have the surgery.
"Since the summer is coming up," she said, "I can take a nice vacation."
Never miss a local story.
Walters, 80, said her condition would be a surprise to many friends.
"But I thought it best not to talk about it too far in advance."
Walters said she had not felt any symptoms from the narrowing of the heart valve, which can worsen and restrict the flow of blood to the heart.
Gyllenhaal confesses fear of ostriches
Jake Gyllenhaal worked hard to embody the fearless hero Prince Dastan in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" — getting bulked up and mastering sword fighting and the acrobatic art of parkour.
One thing he couldn't conquer? His fear of ostriches.
"They would say, 'Don't make any noise around the ostriches. They'll tear out your eyes and rip out your heart.' So, I was naturally terrified," Gyllenhaal, 29, said with a laugh at Sunday's London premiere of the movie, which opens May 28 in the U.S. "They look like they're innocent, but they're really not."
Gyllenhaal's costar, Gemma Arterton , 24, who plays Princess Tamina, can attest to his level of fear. "He was really scared," she told People magazine. "He ran away, and the look on his face — it's not acting. It's real."
'Sex' stars really get along
Hello, lovers! The ladies of "Sex & the City 2" are tired of the pesky rumors that they don't get along — but insist they aren't getting "Carrie-d" away by the gossip.
"It hasn't always been smooth sailing," admits Cynthia Nixon in the upcoming issue of Marie Claire. "But the idea that we're somehow adversarial is ludicrous."
Kristin Davis has to agree.
"There was a (story) that Kim (Kim Cattrall ) and I would eat in the restaurant of our hotel and not sit together, which cracks me up. When I would get back from the set, I would go to the gym and get room service," she explains. "I'm not a put-on-decent-clothes-and-go-to-the-hotel-restaurant person, but Kim is. The story was that we don't like each other. Ridiculous!"
