Slattery fights sanitation building
"Mad Men" star John Slattery says not in my back yard. The actor, who plays advertising executive Roger Sterling on the hit television drama, is fighting plans to build a $346 million sanitation department building in his Manhattan neighborhood.
New York City officials say the new building on Spring Street will get trucks off the street and into a garage and will provide the trucks direct access to the West Side Highway.
But Slattery says his neighbors are worried about pedestrian safety, with garbage trucks expected to add hundreds of visits to the neighborhood each day.
Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, told the New York Daily News the city plans to free up nearby space currently used by the sanitation department and convert it into parkland.
Simon sues Starbucks
Singer Carly Simon is suing Starbucks Corp. and says the coffee company's now-defunct music venture didn't adequately promote her 2008 album.
The singer is seeking unspecified damages related to the release of the 14-track "This Kind of Love" in April 2008.
A lawsuit filed Friday claims the album wasn't available in "a substantial number" of Starbucks stores during the key early months following its release.
Later, when the disc was stocked, the Seattle-based company slashed the price.
Starbucks says it met all its obligations to Simon but the work received only tepid response from customers.
Simon's biggest success came during the '70s and '80s with hits like "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation."
