In "Great Nature (1933-1945)," President Franklin Roosevelt ushers in a golden age for the park system when he creates the Civilian Conservation Corps to battle unemployment during the Great Depression. Congress passes a bill protecting Florida's Everglades region, the first time a park is created solely to preserve an ecosystem. 7 and 9 p.m., PBS and KPTS, Channel 8.

Season premiere

"Private Practice"

The sudsy Southern California saga of Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) continues in a second season that opens with Naomi (Audra McDonald) apparently poised to leave the practice and Sam (Taye Diggs) determined to win her back. Cooper (Paul Adelstein), meanwhile, may finally be free to take things to a new level with Violet (Amy Brenneman), as long as Pete (Tim Daly) doesn't strong-arm him out of the way. 9:01 p.m., ABC and KAKE, Channel 10.

"The Mentalist"

As Lisbon and the team investigate the murder of a state senator's intern, Jane concentrates on finding out what new information has been uncovered in the Red John case. 9 p.m., CBS and KWCH, Channel 12.

Movie

"Bound for Glory"

Director Hal Ashby's lyrical 1976 portrait of folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (David Carradine) and his dedication to exposing the plight of Depression-era workers fairly glows with the sheen of nostalgia, thanks to Haskell Wexler's Academy Award-winning cinematography. Leonard Rosenman's score also won an Oscar. Melinda Dillon and Ronny Cox also star. 7 p.m., TCM, Channel 65.

College Football

Colorado at West Virginia. 6:30 p.m., ESPN, Channel 32.
