Botanical name: Eranthemum nigrum

Location: West of the gazebo in the Button Fountain beds

Description: An annual grown primarily for its bold, ultra-dark foliage. In the summer, it produces white flower spikes with pink centers that stand out beautifully against the dark foliage. Reaches a mature height and spread of 18 inches.

Growing tips: Plant in well-drained soil amended with organic matter in full sun to partial shade.

History: Native to the Solomon Islands. Displayed at Botanica since 2008.

Uses: Provides great contrast for almost anything in the garden, especially variegated plants. Is wonderful as a single specimen or with a grouping in a mixed container. It can also be an attractive houseplant if given the proper conditions.

Also blooming: Roses, wildflowers, water lilies, other annuals and perennials.
