Wichita Grand Opera presents 'The Mikado'

Gilbert & Sullivan's light opera "The Mikado" will be performed this weekend at Century II's Mary Jane Teall Theater, 225 W. Douglas. Here are some facts about the show:

1) After opening in 1885 in London, "The Mikado" ran for 672 consecutive performances at the famous Savoy Theater .

2) All of Gilbert & Sullivan's operas were widely known for their satirical look at British aristocracy and high society. Having "The Mikado" set in Japan allowed Gilbert & Sullivan to openly satirize British institutions and policies.

3) British authorities imposed a ban on "Mikado" performances for a six-week period in 1907, for fear that it might offend a Japanese prince visiting Great Britain. It was later reported that the prince was annoyed that he was unable to see it during his stay.

Last chance to see 'Wicked'

A few tickets remain for " Wicked," the Broadway musical playing at Century II Concert Hall through Sunday. Tickets are $57-$125, through WichitaTix at 316- 219-4849 or www.wichitatix.com.

A lottery drawing for discount tickets is held before each performance. Those interested should arrive at the WichitaTix box office, just inside the Expo Hall entrance of Century II, 2 1/2 hours prior to showtime to have their names placed in the drawing. Thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of seats at $25 each, cash only. The lottery is available only in person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person.
