Specials
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"
So many Halloween TV specials these days are like getting a rock in your trick-or-treat bag, but some 43 years after its first airing, this animated gem remains one of the best, as idealistic young Linus patiently sits in his "sincere" pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to reward him with Halloween largesse. 7 p.m., ABC and KAKE, Channel 10.
"Scream 2009"
Fans and celebrities gather at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for the fourth annual celebration of creative talent in the horror, sci-fi, fantasy and comic genres. Awards for "The Ultimate Scream" and "Scream Queen and King" will share the program with a tribute to comics legend Stan Lee, led by Tobey Maguire, and appearances by the casts of HBO's "True Blood" and the new "Twilight" sequel, "New Moon." 9 p.m., Spike, Channel 44.
Movie
"Poltergeist"
In 1982, the same year that Steven Spielberg was charming us with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," he was scaring us out of our wits with another tale of otherworldly creatures. He co-wrote and co-produced this story of a suburban family terrorized by ghosts who snatch the youngest daughter. Craig T. Nelson stars with JoBeth Williams and two young actresses whose real lives would end tragically: Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne. 7 p.m., TCM, Channel 65.
Sports
NBA Basketball
The NBA opens the 2009-10 season in style tonight on TNT, which offers a doubleheader full of star power and firepower. In the opener, it's the Cleveland Cavaliers and their all-world forward LeBron James playing host to their prime Eastern Conference foes, Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics. The nightcap pits a pair of Los Angeles teams — Kobe Bryant and the defending champion Lakers against the Clippers and 2009 top overall pick Blake Griffin. 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., TNT, Channel 30.
