Well, we can finally report that we had some luck identifying a few of the folks and cars photographed at the world premiere of the movie "Hot Rod Gang" right here in Wichita 55 years ago.

Mike and Terry Heath didn’t exactly go looking for a “plain Jane grocery-getter” when they were in the market for a street cruiser. But they knew when they spotted a low mileage 6-cylinder ’63 Chevy Bel Air 2-door sedan that they had found their car.

Last week we featured the Bob Tyler/Patterson Racing COPO Camaro, which was being prepped to set an NHRA national record in CC/SA. A MoPar had just lowered the record to 9.44 seconds back east shortly before the COPO launched its assault at the SRCA drag strip at Great Bend.

Allan Patterson vividly remembers his first day of competition at the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association drag strip in Great Bend. It was back in 1960, before he had an unrestricted driver’s license, so he had to have his ’40 Sedan towed to the track by his cousin, whose new car broke down in the process.
