Drag racing, then and now

A local group is putting together a 50-year reunion of some of the area drag racers from the “good old days.”

There aren’t a lot of specifics at this point, but if you are one of the people who spent your weekends blasting down the M&N strip in the 1960s, get in touch with Jon Lemon at 316-708-4320 or e-mail him at biscayness@cox.net. He can fill you in.

Speaking of drag racing, if you’ve never seen a fuel drag bike make a pass, do yourself a favor and get out to the Truett and Osborn motorcycle drags at Kansas International Dragway next weekend.

This event has been going on for 42 years and organizer Paul Osborn said he expects about 300 bikes of all kinds to compete. But the all-out drag bikes, with rear tires fatter than anything most of us have ever put on a car, are going to be the show-stoppers. And like they used to say on the radio, with full reverb, “Bring your camera!”
