One of the great things about producing the Wheels page is that I not only get to meet fascinating people each week, but often learn something new about old cars in the process.
Case in point: I received a voice mail about the ’57 Chevy 4-door hardtop we featured last week. The caller politely pointed out the car hadn’t originally been equipped with a 3-speed Turboglide automatic transmission, but a 2-speed Powerglide, the only automatic offered that year.
I had double-checked the owners’ information that the car had undergone a transmission swap to the more common Powerglide before I wrote the story and found the Turboglide had been something of a flop and eventually was phased out. But after the phone call, I did some additional research and found a fascinating 1957 TV commercial on YouTube.com extolling the smooth, virtually shiftless operation of the Turboglide.
And by the way, how cool is it that so many of those great old TV car commercials have been preserved and shared with us on the Internet?
