Time to do a little rumor control: Contrary to rumblings that Automobilia's big car show/street party has been canceled, the event is queued up and ready to roll as usual next Saturday evening, July 10.
Automobilia owner Gary Carpenter said several people had asked if it was true the show would not be held in Old Town next weekend. He quickly reassured them the show is definitely still a "go."
This is the 16th edition of the event. "It started as a customer appreciation party and grew into something much more than that," Carpenter said. "In 15 years, we've never had to use the police," he said.
That's remarkable when you consider there are literally tens of thousands of Ford, GM, Chrysler and import lovers strolling the street shoulder-to-shoulder, all night long.
"This year we're calling it the Sweet 16th," said Carpenter, who said there will be eight live bands performing on stage, three food courts, a model car contest hosted by the Automobilia Model Car Club, a swap meet and a merchandise vendors' court, in addition to all the cars on display. The show will run from 6 p.m. to midnight, free of charge to spectators, followed by the awards ceremony and the traditional midnight to 1:30 a.m. cruise up and down Douglas.
"I've always believed the car's place is in the street, that it's where a car should be shown. And this show has always been dedicated to the people who have a car and bring it to show in the street," Carpenter said.
Hope to see you there.
