After fourteen years in business in Old Town , Andy's Woods By Design is closing.
"We have some health issues in the family that we need to address, so that takes priority," says Carol Anderson , who owns the business with her husband, Andy .
They have a lot to look forward to, though.
"We are at the stage in our life that it's time to make changes and take some vacations," Anderson says.
Also, the couple are expecting their first grandchild in March.
The eclectic Andy's Woods, which is at 300 N. Mead, sells gourmet food, home decor, souvenirs and, until a month ago, custom woodworking.
The Andersons stopped taking new woodworking orders to allow time to get everything done by when they close at the end of the year.
A closing sale starts Oct. 19.
"There's a little excitement, but there's a lot of regret because we like it down here," Carol Anderson says. "We love Old Town. It's a wonderful place to be, and we've had a lot of good customers come in.
"We have made a lot of good friends."
Best bet: 2010
The question keeps coming:
When will the Best Buy at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize open?
There's no answer yet.
"They've accepted possession of the building, and they're in full compliance with their lease," says Jerry Jones of Slawson Cos. , the NewMarket developer.
But he's not certain when the store will open.
"When I've asked them, they've said... 'We haven't decided yet.' "
At this point, the opening isn't likely for this year. Though there's still a slight chance the store could be open in time for Christmas shopping, early next year is a better bet.
Jones says there's no question about whether the store will open.
"We haven't received any indication that they wouldn't open," he says.
College Hill Deli
Since Old Town Martini closed this summer, owners Kassem and Ali Yassine have been doing catering out of the former Krazy Kaz and Papagiorgio's Pizza space at 3407 E. Douglas.
Now, the Yassines are getting ready to open a new business there as well.
College Hill Deli and Catering should be open by the end of October or early November.
There will be indoor seating for about 30 and an outdoor patio as well.
The Yassines will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and continue their catering.
We'll let you know the opening date as soon as it's set.
Eaton agreement?
It sounds like the owners of Eaton Steakhouse may have reached an agreement with the owners of Eaton Place , which sued to evict the restaurant and recover what it said was unpaid rent.
That's according to someone answering a court line at the Sedgwick County Courthouse .
No lawyers in the case are talking yet, but we'll let you know as soon as they do.
