Legend hopes to expand new facility

Legend Senior Living CEO Tim Buchanan says he expects to break ground on a Regent expansion next year.

At the ribbon cutting Friday for Legend Senior Living's Regent independent living retirement center, founder and CEO Tim Buchanan said he expects the company to expand its properties here.

"Part of our plan with this building is to have assisted living," Buchanan said before the ribbon cutting.

He declined to disclose further plans for the assisted living facility other than to say he expects a groundbreaking for it in 2010.

About 50 people attended the ribbon cutting for the Regent, a $17 million, three-story building with 115 units. Hutton Construction was the general contractor and WDM Architects designed the building at 2050 N. Webb Road.

Buchanan said Friday that his privately held company recently opened a retirement facility in Ocala, Fla. It's also planning to open more retirement facilities in other Florida cities such as Cape Coral and Venice.

It has several other properties in Florida, Oklahoma and Kansas, including Park West Plaza in Wichita.

Buchanan founded Legend in 2001. He was a co-founder of the former Sterling House chain of assisted living centers.

Sterling House was acquired by Milwaukee-based Alterra Healthcare in 1997 in a $170 million deal.
