He must have joined “The Agency” with an eye toward excitement, exotic locales and danger. But in Cape Town, South Africa, a backwater as far as foreign intrigue goes, agency newcomer Matt Weston is stuck — a one-man show, running a never-used “safe house” in the CIA’s real-estate portfolio.

  • ‘Journey 2’ an action comedy for preteens

Cast and crew err on the side of silly in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” the amusingly childish sequel to that unlikely 2008 hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” They’ve rendered Jules Verne’s novel into a jokey lark, with broad, corny wisecracks, comic sidekicks and everybody riffing on the ginormous lizards, humungous spiders and the like.

  • Single on Valentine’s Day? Time for a pressure-free party

Instead of cursing Saint Valentine this year, singles should celebrate him.

MAUI, Hawaii — Sample the cream puffs at a historic Japanese bakery.

  • Fascinating and feisty Bucharest: Romania’s capital rises from its past

BUCHAREST, Romania — On Sunday morning in Bucharest, I knew just what I wanted to do: I wanted to go to church. I also wanted to go down to the Old City, visit a few museums and buy a warm pretzel from a sidewalk stand. But mostly I wanted to go to church.

“Wild Thing,” by Josh Bazell (Little, Brown, $25.99) In this sequel to his best-seller, “Beat the Reaper,” Bazell once again applies his keen eye for irony and hypocrisy to murder, corruption, insanity, and the occasional lake monster.
