About the 'For Alex' series

Events described in these stories were drawn from interviews conducted over an 18-month period with the story subjects or from documents provided by the story subjects, or were witnessed by the reporter.

In most cases where dialogue is used, the majority of the subjects interviewed agree on the words that were spoken. The exception is Sen. Pat Roberts' conversation with President George W. Bush on Air Force One. That section was reconstructed based on the recollections of Roberts, a former journalist.

ABOUT THE STAFF

The series was written by Roy Wenzl, a senior writer for The Eagle.

Wenzl, 53, joined The Eagle in 1996. He is a graduate of Kansas State University and has worked as a reporter in Kansas City and as an editor in Illinois and Florida. Wenzl is the author of several nonfiction series for The Eagle and a co-author of the book "Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door."

Photographs from Iraq were taken by members of Alex Funcheon's 1st Platoon and given to The Eagle by Lt. Jon Bland.

Staff-produced photographs and video were taken by Travis Heying, who has produced images for The Eagle since 1997, including assignments for the newspaper's corporate parent that have taken him to Iraq, Afghanistan and the post-Katrina Gulf Coast.

The stories were edited by Jillian Cohan, metro editor, and Jean Hays, deputy editor for news. Copy editors were Michael Roehrman, Cori Dodds and Jill Erickson.

The story packages were designed by Arlice Davenport, Lynette Abitz and Lindsey Glasscock.

Senior photographer and photo editor Bo Rader edited dozens of photographs for the series and companion photo galleries.

Kansas.com interactive content editor Lori O'Toole Buselt and senior producer Jeff Butts created the special section "For Alex" at Kansas.com.
