Jay Haas charged past Tom Watson to win the Senior Players Championship by a stroke, birdieing the 18th hole to match the course record with a 6-under 64 in the final Champions Tour major of the season in Timonium, Md., on Sunday

The 60-year-old Watson was tying to become the oldest major winner on the 50-and-over tour. But after making only one bogey in the first three rounds at Baltimore Country Club, he had three in the final round en route to a 70.

* Lorena Ochoa successfully defended her Navistar LPGA Classic title, overcoming early troubles to shoot a 2-under 70 for a four-stroke victory over Michelle Wie and Brittany Lang at Prattville, Ala.

Ochoa finished at 18-under 270 on The Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex to snap an 11-start winless streak dating to the Corona Championship in late April. The top-ranked Mexican star has three victories this year and 27 overall on the LPGA Tour.

Wie overcame a gimpy left ankle to close with a 66, while Lang had a 70.

Fourteen-year-old Alexis Thompson shot her second straight 74 to tie for 27th at 6 under. She opened with rounds of 65 and 69 to share the second-round lead.

* Matt Kuchar and Vaughn Taylor were still tied after two holes in a sudden-death playoff at the Turning Stone Resort Championship when play was suspended because of darkness, forcing the deciding hole or holes to today in Verona, N.Y.

* Jerod Turner won the inaugural Soboba Classic on for his first Nationwide Tour title, birdieing the final hole for a 2-under 69 and a two-stroke victory over Derek Lamely at San Jacinto, Calif.

The 34-year-old Turner, making only his seventh tour start of the year and ninth overall, won after earning a spot in the field last week with a seventh-place tie in the WNB Golf Classic in Midland, Texas.

Turner finished at 15-under 269 at The Country Club at Soboda Springs and earned $180,000 to jump from 150th to 17th on the money list with $201,656 — with the top 25 after the final three events earning 2010 PGA Tour cards.

* England's Luke Donald shot an 8-under 64 at Kingsbarns to take a one-stroke lead over Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and England's Simon Dyson after the third round of the weather-delayed Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrew's Scotland.

TENNIS

The Wichita State women's team sent sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto into the qualifying draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Los Angeles on Sunday, and the doubles team of Budiharto and senior Stephanie Dalmacio also advanced.

In singles, a 7-5, 6-3 win over Duke's Monica Gorny sealed Budiharto's spot in today's draw.

Budiharto and Dalmacio locked down a spot in doubles with an 8-6 win over Megan Alexander and Maria Babanova of Texas Christian.

BOWLING

The Newman men's team took fifth and Derek Hartnell was named the tournament MVP at the Midwest Collegiate Classic in Milwaukee.

Hartnell averaged 239 over nine games, the highest average out of the 48-team field, and shot the second 300 game in the program's history. Robert Morris College took first.

On the women's side, the Jets took 11th out of 28 teams, with Central Florida taking first. Desiree Lee led Newman with a 192 average over nine games.

SOCCER

Texas sophomore Kylie Doniak connected on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to give the Longhorns a 2-1 upset of No. 19 Kansas in Austin, Texas. Goddard product Whitney Berry had an assist for the Jayhawks, who fell to 0-3 in Big 12 play.

* Two second half goals sank the Newman men's team in a 2-0 loss to Northeastern State in Wichita.

* The Newman women's team fell to No. 12 St. Edward's, 3-0, in Wichita.
