CROSS COUNTRY

Andrew Topham led the Southwestern men's team to its' 30th straight KCAC title by winning the 8K race with a time of 25:07 on Saturday at Lake Afton in the KCAC Championships.

Southwestern's Jim Helmer was named the men's coach of the year.

Southwestern's Amy Pierson was the women's 5K champion with a time of 18:26, but Kansas Wesleyan won the team title and KWU's Jeff Barker was named the women's coach of the year. Friends' Jordan Arnold was second in the 5K with a time of 18:43.

BASKETBALL

Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce each scored 16 points, and the Boston Celtics bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat the winless New Jersey Nets 86-76.... Jamal Crawford scored 25 points, and Josh Smith had 22 points, nine rebounds, six blocked shots and seven assists for Atlanta in a 125-100 win over Denver. Carmelo Anthony had 30 points for Denver, and Chauncey Billups added 25. The Nuggets have lost two straight after opening 5-0.

* Romar Jomes scored 21 points and had five steals for Friends as the Falcons fell to Morningside 74-69 at Crete, Neb. John Bridges was the other Friends player in double figures with 16 points.

* Caleb Walker led the Butler Community College men's team with 17 points and five steals in a 84-56 win over Labette.

BOWLING

Both the Wichita State men's and women's teams were in first place after the first day of the SI-Elite Tournament in Fairview Heights, Ill.

Ronnie Sparks Jr. led the WSU men with an average of 238 over the first four games, and Sandra Gongora led the WSU women with an average of 229.2 over five games.

VOLLEYBALL

Kansas saw its' three-match road winning streak end with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 loss at Oklahoma. Sophomore Allison Mayfield led the Jayhawks with 12 kills.

* Second-ranked Cowley College won the District M Tournament with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 win over Kansas City in the title game. Cowley advances to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament on Nov. 19-21 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc.

* Arica Shepard led No. 7 Emporia State with 18 kills and 11 digs in a 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 win over Missouri Southern at Emporia.

GOLF

Phil Mickelson took a lead after 54 holes at the HSBC Champions with a 5-under 67, setting up a matchup with Tiger Woods in the final World Golf Championship of the year at Shanghai.

Woods failed to make a birdie over the final eight holes for a 70, leaving him two shots behind. Woods was tied with Nick Watney, who holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a 70.

HOCKEY

Zach Parise and David Clarkson each had a goal and an assist on the power play, and the New Jersey Devils won their eighth straight road game with a 3-2 win over Ottawa.... Phil Kessel scored his first goal with Toronto and Jonas Gustavsson made 35 saves to lead the Maple Leafs to a 5-1 win over Detroit.... Tomas Fleischmann scored twice during a five-goal third period, and short-handed Washington beat Florida 7-4 for a sweep of the home-and-home series.
