Fort Scott moved up to No. 2 in the final regular-season NJCAA poll on the heels of its 14-10 win over Butler on Saturday. Navarro (Texas) took over the No. 1 spot thanks to its 23-20 victory over previously unbeaten Blinn (Texas). Blinn fell to No. 4, while Butler dropped to No. 8. Coffeyville improved one spot to No. 16, and Hutchinson is ranked No. 17.
* Colorado sophomore tailback Darrell Scott, the biggest recruiting prize in coach Dan Hawkins' four-year tenure, is leaving the program. Hawkins said Scott is leaving for "assorted personal reasons" and thought he would be transferring closer to his Southern California home. Scott had arthroscopic knee surgery on Oct. 22 to clean up cartilage after getting hurt in the second game of the season at Toledo.
Golf
The Wichita State women's team shot a school-record 36-hole score of 607 at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C. The Shockers finished fourth with their score, 31 strokes over par. They finished four strokes behind third-place Morehead State. College of Charleston won the tournament with an 8-over-par 584. WSU junior Adin Stromgren shot a 148 to tie for ninth place. The 2006 Shockers recorded a 36-hole score of 619 at the NIU Springlake Invitational.
* The PGA Tour is leaving the FedEx Cup just as it is with the playoff schedule and points system. Rick George, chief of operations for the PGA Tour, said adjustments to the points system were not on the agenda and not discussed at a policy board meeting earlier this week.
Horse racing
Zenyatta, a 5-year-old mare who is 13 for 13 racing against females, will take on males for the first time in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Satuday at Santa Anita. Entries for the 14 Breeders' Cup races were drawn Tuesday. Zenyatta was made the 5-2 morning line favorite in a field of 13. She will break from the No. 4 post in the 1 1/4-mile race. She had also been pre-entered in Friday's $2 million Ladies' Classic, which she won last year, but her owners have decided to take a shot becoming the first female to win the Classic in its 25-year history. "There's an opportunity to make history in the Classic, that's why we chose the Classic," trainer John Shirreffs said.
Hockey
Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's two-time reigning MVP, is sidelined by the most serious injury of his NHL career, an "upper-body strain" that could leave him out of the lineup for several games. "Hopefully it's no more than two weeks," coach Bruce Boudreau said. Ovechkin says he's not sure when he was injured. Boudreau thinks it happened during a large scrum that started when Ovechkin and Jason Chimera exchanged a bump for a shove in the second period of Sunday's loss to Columbus.
Basketball
* Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant missed a long three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation, then the Los Angeles Lakers survived in overtime 101-98 as Kobe Bryant scored 21 points. Durant finished with 28, but was 0 for 8 on three-pointers.... Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points as the Denver Nuggets beat the Indiana Pacers 111-93 and improved to 4-0, their best start since 1985.... Paul Pierce scored 21 points, Rasheed Wallace had 20 and the Boston Celtics remained unbeaten with a 105-74 victory over the 76ers.... LeBron James scored 27 points and Shaquille O'Neal added a season-high 21 in a 102-90 win over Washington.... Steve Nash scored 30 points as Phoenix handed Miami its first loss, 104-96.
* Detroit Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince missed Tuesday's game against Orlando with a back injury, ending his consecutive-games streak at 496.
* Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd is expected to miss about two weeks because of a strained tendon in his left knee. He was injured on a dunk Saturday.
YACHTING
The 200-foot mast on the trimaran that will represent the United States in the America's Cup came tumbling down Tuesday during testing on the Pacific Ocean. None of the crew were injured in the mishap, BMW Oracle Racing spokeswoman Jane Eagleson said. The carbon-fiber spar is estimated to have cost $10 million. The syndicate, scheduled to face defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland in a best-of-three showdown beginning Feb. 8, has two other masts.
