BASKETBALL

The Kansas women's team earned its' first national ranking in more than nine years, debuting at No. 20 in The Associated Press preseason poll on Friday. Defending national champion Connecticut was ranked No. 1.

* Kansas men's player Chase Buford has been placed on diversion for drunken driving. The Lawrence city prosecutor's office said the 21-year-old must pay $802 in diversion and other court fees. He also is not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs for one year and must undergo substance abuse treatment.

* Kentucky point guard John Wall has been cleared to play by the NCAA. The school announced that the 6-foot-4 freshman must sit out two games and repay almost $800 in expenses incurred during unofficial visits to schools during his junior year at Word of God Christian Academy.

* Kevin Durant scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead Oklahoma City to a 91-83 win over Detroit. The franchise is 2-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season when it was in Seattle.... Paul Pierce scored 20 of his 22 points in the third quarter, and the Boston Celtics rolled to a 118-90 victory over the Chicago Bulls.... LeBron James scored 24 points and had nine rebounds and six assists to avoid his first 0-3 start in five years as Cleveland beat Minnesota 104- 87.

SOCCER

Emily Cressy scored two goals, while Monica Dolinsky added her team-leading eighth assist as Kansas closed out its regular season with a 3-2 win over No. 20 Missouri, putting the Jayhawks in the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 8 seed. KU will play Missouri in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in San Antonio.

FOOTBALL

B.J. Daniels threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns, and South Florida rebounded from two subpar defensive performances to frustrate No. 20 West Virginia in a 30-19 victory at Tampa, Fla. The Bulls (6-2, 2-2 Big East) allowed 75 points and 887 yards in conference losses to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh the previous two weeks, yet West Virginia (6-2, 2-1) lost to the Bulls for the third time in four years.

GOLF

Anthony Kim advanced to the Volvo World Match Play Championship semifinals despite losing to Scott Strange by three holes in his final round-robin match at Finca Cortesin in Casares, Spain. Strange needed to win by at least four holes. Kim will face undefeated Robert Allenby in the semifinals. Angel Cabrera will face Ross Fisher in the other semifinal.

* John Cook shot a tournament-record 10-under 62 to take a three-stroke lead over Tom Watson and Phil Blackmar after the second round of the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma, Calif.

* Anna Grzebien and Meaghan Francella shot 6-under 66s in wet conditions to share the lead in the LPGA Tour's Hana Bank KOLON Championship at Incheon, South Korea.

MOTORSPORTS

NASCAR driver A.J. Allmendinger was required to take a breath test before Friday's practice at Talladega Superspeedway following his arrest on a drunken driving charge. Allmendinger was arrested by Mooresville (N.C.) police early Thursday morning. He was placed on probation by NASCAR through the end of the season and said he had no problem when series officials asked him to take the test.

Tennis

Venus Williams advanced to the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar, along with Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki will play Serena Williams in on semifinal today, and Venus Williams will face Jankovic in the semis for the second straight year. Venus Williams advanced on sets thanks to Svetlana Kuznetsova's 6-3, 6-2 win over Elena Dementieva. Unbeaten Serena Williams had already gained the semifinals.
