Hutchinson Community College sophomore Heather Robben has been named a NJCAA Division I women's preseason first-team All-American. Robben, a 5-foot-9 Maize product, averaged 14.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game last season as she helped lead the Blue Dragons to the Region VI title. Independence's Sadie Webb, of Emporia, was a second-team pick.
* Former Indiana coach Bob Knight will not attend next week's induction into the athletic department's hall of fame. Athletic director Fred Glass said that Knight contacted him directly to decline the invitation. Glass said Knight was concerned that the interest in him would be a distraction from the other six inductees.
* Derrick Rose scored 13 points and had seven assists to lead the balanced Chicago Bulls to an impressive 92-85 season-opening victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Rose, who missed most of the preseason with an injured ankle, waved and blew a kiss toward the crowd before the opening tip. Chicago pulled away in the second half despite Tim Duncan's 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Spurs.
FOOTBALL
Casey Barth kicked a 21-yard field goal on the final play and North Carolina stopped No. 14 Virginia Tech all night on the way to a 20-17 victory at Blacksburg, Va. The Tar Heels (5-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) got their first conference win after forcing a fumble by Ryan Williams at his own 24 with 2:02 left and turning it into the winning drive.
GOLF
Phil Blackmar and Jeff Sluman shot 6-under 66s in breezy conditions Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma, Calif.
* American Anthony Kim won two round-round robin matches in the Volvo World Match Play Championship, while fourth-ranked Paul Casey lost twice to drop out of contention for a semifinal spot at Casares, Spain.
* England's Ian Poulter shot a 5-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over South Africa star Ernie Els and Taiwan's Chan Yih-shin during the suspended first round of the Singapore Open.
* Play in the Viking Classic was postponed because of impending rain and wet conditions at Annandale Golf Club, pushing the event to a Monday finish at Madison, Wis.
MOTORSPORTS
NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger was arrested for drunk driving in Mooresville, N.C., after police say Allmendinger was pulled over and failed a field sobriety test. A spokesman for Richard Petty Motorsports says the team was not ready to comment on the arrest. Allmendinger drives for the team and has long been rumored to move into Petty's famed No. 43 next season with Best Buy as a sponsor.
HOCKEY
Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 12th and 13th goals, Semyon Varlamov stopped a penalty shot and the first-place Washington Capitals held on at the end to hand Atlanta its fourth straight loss, 4-3.... Steven Stamkos had two power-play goals and an assist, and Todd Fedoruk, Ryan Malone and Alex Tanguay also scored for Tampa Bay in a 5-2 win over Ottawa.... Dainius Zubrus scored with 1:26 left, and Yann Danis made 31 saves in his first appearance of the season to lead New Jersey to a 2- 1 win over Boston.
* NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin will be lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins for two to three weeks because of a strained right shoulder.
Malkin has been attempting to play through the injury, but coach Dan Bylsma says the team decided to rest the center. The star Russian would miss seven games if he is out two weeks and 10 games if he is out three.
VOLLEYBALL
Debbie Ohl had 13 kills, nine digs and eight blocks to lead No. 13 Hutchinson to a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-13) win over Butler at Hutchinson. Carol Logato added 12 kills and 10 digs for the Blue Dragons.
SOCCER
The Emporia State women's team lost to Missouri Southern, 3-0 at Emporia. Katrina Goscha had 11 saves for the Hornets.
