The Missouri Valley Conference will induct coaches Rich Herrin and Cheryl Burnett and player Kyle Korver into hits Hall of Fame on March 5 in St. Louis. Herrin coached Southern Illinois to three NCAA Tournament berths and four NIT berths. He went 225-174 in 13 seasons. Burnett coached the Missouri State women's team to the Final Four in 1992 and 2001. Korver, who played at Creighton, won MVC Player of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003.

* The Newman men were picked fifth of 10 teams in the Heartland Conference preseason poll. Dallas Baptist was picked first, and defending champion Incarnate Word (Texas) was second. Newman (15-12, 9-7) finished fifth last season.

Baseball

Kansas City Royals pitcher Zack Greinke has been named American League Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News online magazine. Greinke was selected by a panel of 31 Major League general managers and assistant GMs. He finished the 2009 season 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA — the best in baseball — and was second in the American League with 242 strikeouts. Greinke received the honor on Wednesday, his 26th birthday.

Jim Tracy was named Sporting News' Manager of the Year for the National League in his first year at the helm of the Colorado Rockies. Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia received the award in the American League in voting by a panel of 22 Major League Baseball managers.

* St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Wednesday, with doctors removing bone chips and trimming bone spurs. He is expected to make a full recovery in time for next season. Pujols, 29, led the majors with 47 homers this season while batting .327 with 135 RBIs.

* Wichita State will play Game 4 of its fall series at 3 p.m., today. Black leads the best-of-7 series 2-1 after a 15-3 victory on Tuesday. Admission is a can of food for the Kansas Food Bank.

Football

Injured Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford called off a news conference scheduled for Wednesday night, a meeting during which he was supposed his plans for the season. Coach Bob Stoops said Bradford needed to gather more information before choosing what to do about his injured right, throwing shoulder. Season-ending surgery is a likely option.

Volleyball

Kansas State beat Colorado 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) in Boulder, Colo. Kelsey Chipman and JuliAnn Chisholm of Hillsboro had 16 kills each, and freshman Alex Muff of Concordia added 11.

* Kansas beat Texas Tech 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) in Lubbock, Texas. Allison Mayfield had 15 kills for KU.

* Emporia State, the No. 7 team in NCAA Div. II, lost to No. 19 Truman State 3-1 (25-17, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23) in Emporia.

Soccer

Newman's Mallory Hurst was chosen Heartland Conference offensive player of the week, and Heather Baloga was defensive player of the week.

* Hutchinson (14-0-1) remained No. 10 in the NJCAA poll. The Dragons conclude the regular season today at Coffeyville.

Golf

U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover ran off three straight birdies in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Port Royal Golf Course, closing with a 5-under 66 for a five-shot victory in Southampton, Bermuda.

Masters champion Angel Cabrera also had a 66 and finished second after Stewart Cink bogeyed the last hole for a 70. PGA champion Y.E. Yang shot 70 to finish last among the four major champions.

* Wichita State senior Dustin Garza was named Missouri Valley Conference golfer of the week. Garza won his third tournament of the fall on Tuesday at UMKC's Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City. Garza shot a 5-under-par 211 to earn medalist honors.

Tennis

Wichita State's Lily Wakim lost to Tulsa's Meredith Burns 6-1, 6-3 in qualifying play at the ITA Central Regional in Norman. The main draw begins today. WSU's Lutfiana Budhiharto is seeded second. Stephanie Dalmacio is seeded eighth, and they combine for the No. 4 doubles seed.

Hockey

Boston Bruins scoring leader Marc Savard will miss four to six weeks with a broken left foot. The forward has led the team in scoring each of the past three years. He did not miss a game last season, when he had 25 goals and 63 assists for 88 points. He has four goals and three assists this season.

* Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will be out four to six weeks with a broken left wrist, his third significant injury in slightly more than a year. Gonchar, third in scoring among NHL defensemen with eight points, missed the first 56 games of last season after undergoing left shoulder surgery.
