SOCCER

Lauren Henry scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Maize product Leah Talley as Washburn held off Emporia State 2-1 in Topeka. Talley scored the Ichabods' other goal with an assist from Tia Stovall, also from Maize.

* American businessman Stan Kroenke increased his stake in London-based Premier League club Arsenal, edging closer to a full takeover.

The Gunners announced that Kroenke bought 90 more shares for $1.2 million, increasing his holding from 28.7 to 28.9 percent.

That's just short of the 29.9 percent threshold that would trigger a mandatory offer for the remaining shares.

Kroenke also owns the Colorado Rapids, Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche.

GOLF

Champions Tour winner Tom Pernice Jr. shot a bogey-free 9-under 62 for a share of the first-round lead with Troy Matteson and Spencer Levin in the PGA Tour's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Bob Heintz and Martin Laird were a stroke back, and three-time Las Vegas winner Jim Furyk matched Scott Piercy at 64. Furyk bogeyed his first two holes.

* Italy's Francesco Molinari shot a 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Portugal Masters.

FOOTBALL

Eighth-ranked Cincinnati got two touchdown passes from Tony Pike before he left in the third quarter with a sprained left wrist, then backup Zach Collaros ran 75 yards for a score in a 34-17 victory over No. 21 South Florida in Tampa.

* Injured tailback Stafon Johnson has made a surprise appearance at Southern California's team meeting before the sixth-ranked Trojans' trip to Notre Dame.

Johnson was released from the hospital on Wednesday, just 16 days after his neck and throat were crushed in a weightlifting accident. The senior won't play again this season, but is continuing his rehabilitation at home.

After a quick introduction from coach Pete Carroll, Johnson dropped in on the Trojans' meeting at Heritage Hall on Thursday morning, exchanging high-fives with his teammates amid applause and cheers.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice in a 28-second span of the second period, and the Washington Capitals beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 to end a four-game losing streak.... Nicklas Lidstrom became the first European defenseman and eighth overall to reach 1,000 points, assisting on two goals for Detroit in a 5-2 win over Los Angeles.... Milan Michalek had his first three-goal game in the NHL, scoring twice short-handed and once on a power play for Ottawa in a 7-1 win over Tampa Bay....
