Heights looks to continue its City League dominance as it travels to Northwest for a 7 p.m. game tonight against the Grizzlies. The Falcons rushed for 452 yards against Great Bend despite losing running back Dreamius Smith on the second play of the game. Smith, who was ejected, will be suspended for tonight's game.

The Kansas women won the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Alvamar. KU's 903 total for 54 holes was 10 strokes ahead of second-place Arkansas-Little Rock. Kansas State finished third in the 12-team field, and Wichita State placed sixth. KU's Grace Thiry won individual honors with a 219 total, one shot ahead of teammate Katy Nugent. K-State's Whitney Pyle and WSU's Adin Stromgren were among five places tied for sixth at 227.

Wichita State's women's team is in sixth place at the 12-team Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence. Seniors Lauren Hassell and Adin Stromgren are tied for eighth place after shooting 150. Today's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. WSU carded a 622, 19 strokes behind leader Kansas.

Nebraska's departure from the Big 12 to the Big Ten will cost the university more than $9 million. The Big 12 and the university announced a settlement in which the conference will withhold $9.255 million in conference distributions rather than the estimated $19.4 million the Big 12 had sought to withhold under its bylaws. "We feel the long-term benefits of entering into the Big Ten, both academically and athletically, will make this a very good investment," athletic director Tom Osborne said.

WSU (4-2) plays two matches today.

The Nationwide Tour's 2011 Wichita Open will be held June 16-19, the tournament announced Wednesday. Tournament director Roy Turner had said during this year's tournament in August that he would ask the tour to move Wichita from an August date to a June date.

The NFL is making additional tweaks to the umpire rule. All 32 teams were told in a memo from the league that the umpire will position himself 12 yards from the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped instead of approximately 15 yards, which was used during the preseason. The umpires must now only get beyond the deepest running back — not established in position — before the ball can be snapped. The changes should make it easier for teams to use the no- huddle offense. Officials will now have the discretion to issue a warning before enforcing the 5-yard penalty for an illegal snap. Clear violations, the memo said, will continue to be penalized without a warning. Umpires also will continue to be positioned in the middle of the defense, their old position, during the final two minutes of the first half, the final five minutes of the game and when the offense is at, or inside, the opponent's 5-yard line. Kansas won twice Friday at the Jayhawk Classic, improving to 6-0 on the season. Kansas beat Akron 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-13) in the first match. Freshman setter Kara Wehrs had 30 assists and five kills. In the evening match KU topped Arkansas 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-10). Redshirt freshman Carolina Jarmoc had a team-high 12 kills.

Members of the 2010 Emporia State women's team that was the NCAA Division II championship will participate in a "trophy tour" at the Pump House, 825 E. 2nd Street, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16. Players will sign autographs as part of a five- city tour of the region.

Hockey

The Wichita Thunder acquired Central Hockey League all-star forward Jesse Bennefield from Rio Grande in exchange for forward Tomas Klempa. Last season, Bennefield has 24 goals and 59 points in 50 games for Rio Grande. In 2008- 09, Bennefield had a career-best 35 goals and 71 points in 64 games.

The Wichita State women's team released its 2010-11 schedule on Monday, including a season-opener against Arizona on Nov. 12 at Koch Arena and seven matchups with teams that made the postseason a year ago. Tennis

Longtime coach and instructor Goose Doughty will be inducted into the U.S. Tennis Association Missouri Valley section Hall of Fame on Dec. 4 in Overland Park. Doughty, 76, is a former high school basketball and tennis coach who for 47 years has taught children to play the game at the McAdams Park courts that now bear his name.
