ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Emily Stockman has been named WSU Athlete of the Week for leading the Shockers to a 2-0 weekend with road wins over Southern Illinois and Evansville. Stockman posted double-doubles in both matches with 12 kills and 19 digs at SIU and 19 kills and 14 digs at Evansville.

VOLLEYBALL

Kansas State won its second straight Big 12 match, 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-13 over Texas Tech on Sunday in Manhattan. Middle blocker led the Wildcats with 13 kills.

CROSS COUNTRY

Andrew Topham led the Southwestern men's team to its 30th straight KCAC title by winning the 8K race with a time of 25:07 on Saturday at Lake Afton in the KCAC championships.

Halls of fame

Former Salina Journal and Hutchinson News sportswriter Harold Bechard has been hired as the director of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. He will operate the hall's facilities at the Wichita Boathouse and Newton's Chisholm Trail Mall. Ted Hayes relinquished his role as director but remains as president.

Football

Fort Scott moved up to No. 2 in the final regular-season NJCAA poll on the heels of its 14-10 win over Butler on Saturday. Navarro (Texas) took over the No. 1 spot thanks to its 23-20 victory over previously unbeaten Blinn (Texas). Blinn fell to No. 4, while Butler dropped to No. 8. Coffeyville improved one spot to No. 16, and Hutchinson is ranked No. 17.

Volleyball

Wichita State's Emily Stockman was named Missouri Valley Conference player of the week after hitting .352 in two victories last week.

FOOTBALL

On Sunday, a day after Kansas coach Mark Mangino pulled quarterback Todd Reesing in the fourth quarter of KU's 42-21 loss to Texas Tech, Mangino said he had not spoken directly to Reesing about his benching.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore Heather Robben has been named a NJCAA Division I women's preseason first-team All-American. Robben, a 5-foot-9 Maize product, averaged 14.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game last season as she helped lead the Blue Dragons to the Region VI title. Independence's Sadie Webb, of Emporia, was a second-team pick.

The Kansas women's team kept its Big 12 Tournament hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Iowa State on Sunday in Lawrence, thanks to Monica Dolinsky's penalty kick in the 55th minute.

Tennis

The funeral for Goddard tennis coach John Markham will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Central Community Church in Wichita. Markham died Thursday after having liver cancer for more than two years.

baseball

Wichita State's season will begin Feb. 23 at Kansas and include 30 home games. The scheduled was released by WSU on Thursday. WSU plays home nonconference series with San Jose State and Washington State, as well as two games against Oral Roberts and single games against Kansas State, Kansas and Oklahoma State. Basketball

The Missouri Valley Conference will induct coaches Rich Herrin and Cheryl Burnett and player Kyle Korver into hits Hall of Fame on March 5 in St. Louis. Herrin coached Southern Illinois to three NCAA Tournament berths and four NIT berths. He went 225-174 in 13 seasons. Burnett coached the Missouri State women's team to the Final Four in 1992 and 2001. Korver, who played at Creighton, won MVC Player of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003.

Connecticut held its first practice since the stabbing death of player Jasper Howard over the weekend.

SOCCER

Lisa Silwinki scored off a free kick in the 107th minute to give Baylor a 2-1 overtime win over Kansas on Sunday in Waco, Texas. Emily Cressy scored the Jayhawks' only goal. KU dropped to 10-6-1 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play.

Volleyball

Wichita beat Bradley 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) in Peoria, Ill. Emily Stockman and Kim Wadsworth had 9 kills apiece for the Shockers, who bounced back from Friday night's five-set loss to first-place Northern Iowa. Bradley is winless in the Missouri Valley Conference.

VOLLEYBALL

Eighth-ranked Emporia State defeated No. 7 Washburn 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 26-28, 15-13 on Friday night in front of a season-high crowd of 2,165 in Emporia. Brittney Miller led the Hornets with 20 kills and All-American Arica Shepard added 17 kills and 21 digs for ESU. Mollie Lacy led the Ichabods with 18 kills.

NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. headlined the five inductees into the first class of the Hall of Fame. France, who formed the National Association of Stock Car Racing in 1947, was the first inductee announced Wednesday.

Volleyball

Newman defeated Friends 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) on Tuesday at Fugate Gymnasium. Angie Bennett had 14 kills and a .391 attack percentage to lead the Jets' attack, and Chelsey Potter added 13 kills. For Friends, Courtney McCune had 12 kills and Erin Cooper had 15 digs.

Hockey

The Wichita Thunder has partnered with the Brian S. Etheridge Memorial Fund for their Oct. 23 game against the Tulsa Oilers. Those in the emergency services industry may purchase tickets at a discount, with $5 from each going to the Etheridge fund. Etheridge was killed Sept. 28 in the line of duty. Thomas Holmstrom broke a tie with a power-play goal with 6:53 left in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.... Jonathan Quick made 29 saves, and Ryan Smyth and Michal Handzus scored in the Los Angeles Kings' 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.... Ryan Malone had three goals, including a go-ahead score midway through the third period, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2.... David Clarkson scored a power-play goal with 3:35 left to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.... Teemu Selanne scored the only goal in a shootout, and had two goals in regulation to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.... The Phoenix Mercury are WNBA champions for the second time in three seasons, leaning on their "big three" to pull out a 94-86 victory over the tenacious Indiana Fever in the deciding Game 5 on Friday in Phoenix.

Andale 62, Kingman 0

Jake Weninger threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns then ran for another as Andale stayed undefeated with a blowout at winless Kingman.

Baseball

Wichita State will opens its fall series on Oct. 17 and wrap up the best-of-7 series on Oct. 28. No night games are scheduled for the series, which is starting later in October than usual due to the installation of artificial turf at Eck Stadium. Admission is a can of food for the Kansas Food Bank. The Shockers will also scrimmage at 3:30 p.m., Saturday and 2 p.m., Sunday.

GOLF

Jay Haas charged past Tom Watson to win the Senior Players Championship by a stroke, birdieing the 18th hole to match the course record with a 6-under 64 in the final Champions Tour major of the season in Timonium, Md., on Sunday

Ninth-grader Alexis Thompson shot a 3-under 69 on Friday for a share of the lead with top-ranked Lorena Ochoa and three others after the second round of the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville, Ala.

HOCKEY

Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, and Jose Theodore stopped 19 shots to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night in the season-opener. Brooks Laich added two goals and an assist, Nicklas Backstrom had three assists, and Alexander Semin had two for Washington, which had not won in Boston in regulation in 14 tries since 2000.... Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges scored with only 12.8 seconds left on the overtime clock, and Carey Price made 43 saves in the Canadiens' 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Basketball

Wichita State's game against Creighton will be played at 1 p.m. on Jan. 9 and be televised on ESPNU. The time of the game had not been determined when the scheduled was announced last month.

volleyball

The Northwest-Bishop Carroll match scheduled for Tuesday was postponed until Oct. 12 because five Northwest players were ill with high temperatures. Officials decided to postpone the match to keep the illness from spreading.
