Find school bus accident data online

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: A database of accidents involving school buses.

Why you'd want it: To learn more about school bus safety. Seven Valley Center grade school students were hurt last week when a bus crashed.

Where you get the records: The National Coalition for School Bus Safety keeps a comprehensive list of accidents. Go to www.ncsbs.org. Click on the "Accident Data" link on the left side of the home page. Then choose a year or browse all years.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
