Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.
For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Crime statistics from Kansas colleges, universities and trade schools.
Why you'd want them: To gauge the safety of the campus where you or your family members study.
Where you get the records: From the campus security data analysis Web site developed by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education. Go to http://ope.ed.gov/security/ and click on "get data from one institution/campus" in the right navigation bar, then search for your school by name or location.
How much it will cost: The information is free.
