WASHINGTON —"Beltway Sniper" John Allen Muhammad, 41, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Tuesday in a Virginia prison after his initial appeals were dismissed by state and federal judges.
He and his 17-year old accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, were convicted of 10 murders in Maryland and Virginia in 2002. They were believed to have killed at least seven others in their shooting spree, in which they shot their victims while concealed in the trunk of a car.
Because of his youth, Malvo was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
School lunch safety investigation sought
WASHINGTON — The chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee wants an investigation into the risk of deadly E. coli getting into school lunches.
Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., is worried about a recent outbreak that killed at least two people and sickened about two dozen others in 11 states.
No schools were involved in the outbreak. But Miller said he's worried that tainted food might be purchased for school meal programs.
Miller asked the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, to see whether there are adequate protections for school meals at the local, state and federal level.

WOODS CROSS, Utah — A refinery explosion that severely damaged 10 homes Wednesday was caused by a burst pipe that sprayed hydrogen gas onto a nearby heater, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board's lead investigator said.
Donald Holmstrom said investigators don't know why the pipe suffered what he called a "catastrophic failure."
