Comments (0)

The Wichita Home School team took first place in both categories Saturday at the 11th annual BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) competition at Wichita State University.

The Home School team qualified for regional competition Dec. 4 and 5 in Fort Smith, Ark., along with Circle High School (second in BEST Award), Campus High School (third in BEST Award) and Ambassadors for Christ Academy of Bentonville, Ark. (second in Game Award).

The BEST Award is based on a project notebook, oral presentation, table display, interviews and overall spirit and sportsmanship. The Game Award is based on a team robot's score in the game competition.

Wichita Home School also won the Cessna Teamwork Award.

Circle High also won the Spirit AeroSystems Most Robust Design Award, the Craftsmanship Award and the Sportsmanship Award.

Man arrested after garage burglary

Wichita police say an early morning burglary is a good reminder to Wichitans to close their garage doors at night.

Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said a man in the 12000 block of West Jewell realized just after 1 a.m. Saturday that he hadn't shut his garage door, then heard a sound and saw a shadow as he went to close it. He saw someone run off after taking something from his car.

The homeowner saw a man get into a truck parked outside and got the tag number. Police went to the tag owner's house and arrested a man there.

"Everybody needs to make sure their garage is closed," Brunscheen said.

Nonprofits asked to submit their wish lists

It's time for area nonprofits to submit their wish lists.

In late November, The Eagle will publish a wish list from area organizations that need donations and volunteers.

The list is open to nonprofit social service organizations in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties. To have your group included, fill out and submit the online form at Kansas.com/wishlist.

Participants will be asked to share information on the nonprofit agency, its mission and its needs for the holiday season.
