NEW YORK — The vicious hair-pulling of an opponent was inexcusable. But prominent advocates of women's sports say that so, too, has been much of the commentary generated by the popular
video of college soccer player Elizabeth Lambert's combative tactics in a recent game.

"Catfight" has been a term commonly used in cyberspace reactions to the video clip now seen by millions of people around the world. One Web site ran a poll: "Do you find violent women sexy?" Some bloggers — lapsing into old
stereotypes — suggested Lambert's menstrual cycle was a factor.

"It's clearly sexist," said Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, as she assessed the overall reaction to Lambert's rough play in a Nov. 5 game between her New Mexico team and Brigham Young.

SEATTLE — Landon Donovan looked zoned out behind the table, microphone in his face, lights glaring into his eyes, talking about a season that's gone so right for himself and the Los Angeles
Galaxy.

Finally, he paused and almost asked permission to speak candidly. To really say why a Galaxy team that was so dysfunctional a year ago and this year was surrounded by distraction now finds itself playing Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup final
today.

' 'There are a few points that stand out to me. One was having (coach) Bruce (Arena) come in and just create stability, which we hadn't had for a while. And candidly, the second was David's reaction to everything that's gone on,'' Donovan said
with David Beckham seated beside him. ''Life is about choices. He could have come in and chosen to be something different than he has been. He chose to be a man and want this team to be successful. Without him, we're not where we are.''

Eliot Halverson has had success at every level on his way up the figure-skating ladder.

Halverson earned national championships at the novice, intermediate and junior levels before he moved up to the senior division three years ago. He showed no signs of stopping that success Friday night at Wichita Ice Center.

Halverson finished second with a score of 64.47 in the men's short program at the Midwestern Sectionals.

Wichita State announced a seven-man recruiting class Tuesday. Signing were Roff (Okla.) infielder Dayne Parker; Choctaw (Okla.) infielder Josh Halbert; pitchers Kris Gardner of Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas; Cale Elam of
Oktaha, Okla.; Zach Beringer of Harrisburg, Mo.; Albert Minnis of Lawrence; and catcher Bob Arens of Northwest High. Minnis, who pitched for the Class 6A champions in 2008, and Parker played in the Area Code Games showcase last summer. Arens
hit .507 for the Grizzlies and was named All-Class 6A as the designated hitter.

Football

The Buffalo Bills fired coach Dick Jauron and promoted coordinator Perry Fewell to take over as interim head coach. The shakeup, which caught some players by surprise, came during the players' day off and after the Bills (3-6) stumbled out of their off
week to fall further out of contention with a 41-17 loss at Tennessee last weekend. Fewell is the team's fifth coach since Wade Phillips was fired after the 2000 season.

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao spent long, hard weeks getting ready for one of the biggest nights of his life. Hundreds of hours sparring in sweltering gyms, nearly as many on morning runs through deserted streets.

Not to mention all those nights rehearsing with the band.

Many in boxing think Miguel Cotto will be Pacquiao's toughest challenge when they meet tonight in a highly anticipated 145-pound fight. But after trading punches he has to please another kind of crowd when he takes the stage to sing with
his band later that night down the Las Vegas Strip.

A heavyweight fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar is the bout most mixed martial arts fans want to see, but contractual obligations and medical problems probably will prevent a showdown between the two for another year,
Emelianenko's camp said Monday.

Emelianenko survived a cut nose Saturday to retain his unofficial standing as the top MMA heavyweight in the world by defeating Brett Rogers in a second-round technical knockout. He closed the victory with a stand-up, right-handed punch,
then pounced on Rogers to deliver a left-right combination on the canvas before the referee ended the fight.

Emelianenko-Rogers headlined CBS' "Saturday Night Fights" card of four bouts promoted by Strikeforce/M-1, with a near-capacity crowd of 11,500 filling the Sears Centre near Chicago.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. —Fedor Emelianenko stopped Brett Rogers in the second round in a Strikeforce M-1 Global heavyweight bout Saturday night.

Emelianenko (31-1) landed a right hook that sent Rogers (10-1) down to the mat and Emelianenko followed with exchange of punches to the face of Rogers. Referee John McCarthy ended the fight at 1:48 in the second round.

The win didn't come easy for Emelianenko. He landed a left hook that knocked Rogers off balance in the first round, but Rogers landed a combination of punches that left blood smeared across Emelianenko's face.
