Kapaun golf continues red-hot CL play

It's difficult to envision a scenario where Kapaun Mount Carmel doesn't contend for the City League golf championship Thursday at McDonald Park.

The Crusaders, undefeated in league play, have put together back-to-back impressive dual performances.

Two weeks ago, they took down Bishop Carroll, their arch-rival and closest competitor in the City League, by 15 strokes. That's also Kapaun's narrowest margin of victory thus far.

Last week, Kapaun shot a 281, which included three players under par. Max Lazzo, A.J. Gebert and David Auer all shot 69.

Sandwiched in between was a fifth-place finish at the Hutchinson Invitational, which featured many of the state's best teams.

The race for the individual medalist honors may not be close, either.

Heights' Travis Deckert leads the league with a 71.6 average, which is nearly five strokes better than Grant Burnside from Southeast.

Deckert, a senior who has signed to play at the Air Force Academy, is looking forward to playing at the Falcons' home course again, where he shot a 66 earlier this season.

"One of my goals before the year was to win City," Deckert said. "I took second as a sophomore and third last season, so I'm ready for it."

Tee-times start at noon, with the leaders going out first.

Division 1 of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail tees of at 9 a.m. today at Consolver Golf Course, with Goddard the favorite.

Division 2 plays today at Ark City Country Club. Arkansas City was the top team in the regular season.

Consolver will be the site of the Division 3 tournament Thursday, with Andover and Augusta expected to battle for the title.

Andover Central and Andale-Garden Plain are the top teams in Division 4, which plays Tuesday at Consolver.
