Wichita Southeast product Clarence Anderson scored four touchdowns on 13 receptions and a school-record 291 yards receiving to lead No. 5 Ottawa to a dramatic, 40-34 come-from-behind win over No.
13 Hastings (Neb.) in the opening round of the NAIA playoffs on Saturday at Ottawa.

Trailing 34-6 midway through the third quarter, the Braves reeled off 34 unanswered points for the victory, with the game-winner coming on a 64-yard run by Andy Otto in the fourth quarter. Ottawa quarterback Ethan Haller threw for 415
yards and four touchdowns.

It was the first playoff win in school history.

A couple of months ago, Friends volleyball player Courtney McCune was digging around in the basement at her mother's house and found a jacket, which isn't really unusual in itself.

But this was no normal jacket.

"It was the jacket they gave us at Friends when we went to nationals in 1984," said McCune's mother, Rhonda Navarre. "She said 'I have to wear this,' and took it. I haven't seen it since, although I've gone and bought some new gear since then."

Top-ranked Fort Scott Community College announced Tuesday that it will play No. 2 Blinn (Texas) on Dec. 6 in the Citizens Bank Bowl at Pittsburg for the NJCAA football championship.

"What else was there?" Fort Scott coach Jeff Sims said. "It had to be 1 vs. 2 or it wouldn't have been a real national championship game."

Blinn (10-1), champion of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, made its way to the national title game by beating then-No. 1 Navarro 45-34 in the league title game. The win avenged Blinn's only loss of the season.

In many ways, the first time Jeff Paulson met Brian Ward was ground zero for everything that has happened to the McPherson football team this season.

When the top spot for the Bulldogs came open after the 2006 season, Paulson, now a senior, was coming off an all-KCAC season at running back and part of the hiring committee that interviewed coaches.

"I knew (Ward) was something special," Paulson said. "Just the way he spoke, the way he carried himself... he was very confident, very driven, and we didn't have that before."

FORT SCOTT — The opportunity was there for Butler to return the heartache from two weeks ago. Instead, the Grizzlies got another heartbreaker of their own.

Fort Scott defeated Butler 13-12 in the Region VI championship game, securing its right to play for the national title and beating the Grizzlies for the second time in 16 days.

No. 2 Fort Scott (11-0) got another break when No. 1 Navarro lost to No. 3 Blinn 45-34 in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference title game on Sunday. Fort Scott will likely move up to No. 1 in the new NJCAA rankings and stay in
Kansas for the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg on Dec. 6.

Corey Schultz approached his teammate and looked for the right words. They didn't come.

Instead, the Ottawa wide receiver screamed. Loud and long, reaching out to diminutive receiver Clarence Anderson until he had the Wichita Southeast product in a gigantic, postgame bear hug.

The words came later.

No. 8 Butler (8-2) at No. 2 Fort Scott (10-0) —The endgame for the Greyhounds is simple: Win and they play for a national title, which could very well be an almost-home game at the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg on Dec.
6.

For Butler, revenge could serve as a much bigger motivating factor as Fort Scott ended the Grizzlies' hopes for a third straight national title — and their eight-year reign as Jayhawk Conference champion — when they beat Butler at Fort Scott on Oct.
31.

Greyhounds' running back Jasmin Hopkins is the key for the Fort Scott offense, having run for 1,575 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, but backup Justin Woods (974 yards, 10 TDs) doesn't let teams take a break when Hopkins goes out.

Shane Mascarenas passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns in McPherson's 44-17 win over Bethany at McPherson. It was the KCAC regular-season finale for both teams.

The Bulldogs needed Friends to beat Ottawa by less than 41 points on Saturday to clinch the KCAC's lone automatic bid to the NAIA playoffs, but after the Braves won 49-42 McPherson must now wait until this afternoon to find out if it was
awarded one of seven at-large bids in the 16-team field.

Andy Skinner caught seven passes for 163 yards, including a 60-yarder, for McPherson.

Top 10 teams aren't supposed to lose to unranked teams in their season openers.

But that's what the Friends football team did, falling to then-unranked McPherson 60-38 on Sept. 12.

For the three-time defending KCAC champion, the loss was more than just stunning. It altered the team's perception of itself.

Bethel football coach Mike Moore announced his resignation Friday after 10 seasons. He will coach the team in today's season finale against Sterling.

Moore won KCAC titles with the Threshers in 2006 and 2007 and was named KCAC coach of the year in 2000 and 2006. His career record is 47-51, including 2-7 this season.

"There were several things that played into it; but mainly that my kids are 15, 13 and 11 and it's getting harder to justify to them why I can't see them or come watch them play," said Moore, 41. "This was a very difficult decision, but it's what I
think is best for my family and for this program."

KCAC

No. 6 Ottawa (9-0, 8-0 KCAC) at No. 13 Friends (8-1, 7-1), 1:30 p.m. —Fans will get a chance to see two high-flying offenses, including Wichita Southeast's Clarence Anderson, a wide receiver for Ottawa. Anderson has piled up receiving yards
(1,124) and touchdowns (14) this season, and also returns kicks and punts.

Bethany (4-5, 3-5) at No. 15 McPherson (8-1, 7-1), 1:30 p.m. —Regardless of the outcome of the Ottawa-Friends game, the Bulldogs must win here to keep playoff hopes alive, which could very well be through an at-large bid. In almost 90 years of
football, no McPherson team has made the postseason.

To hear him tell it, each time Emporia State's Lamar Wilbern goes to get a rebound, it's more than just angles to the basket and boxing out.

It's more like a sixth sense.

"I don't really know how to describe it other than I just see it happen before it actually happens," Wilbern said. "It's always been like that, where I kind of just know where the ball is going to come off at. After that, there's no technique involved,
I just want the ball more than anybody else."
