Greensburg Tornado

Leak forces new evacuation

Comments (0)

Parts of Greensburg had to be evacuated again today even as residents were allowed in to retrieve belongings.

Rescuers were working to shore up a slight leak on a 30,000-gallon rail car carrying anhydrous ammonia, a tank damaged in the tornado, said David Sternbenz, an official with the Topeka Fire Department.

While rescuers were working on it, they accidentally broke off a 2-inch valve, causing a serious leak. All incoming traffic into Greensburg has been stopped because of the leak.

They are bringing in a new valve from Dodge City but are trying to intercept the truck with a helicopter to bring the valve in faster.

The car was carrying 14,000 pounds of liquid.

People in the immediate area were evacuated.
