Lavonta Williams, who was appointed to fill the vacant District 1 seat on the Wichita City Council 1 ½ years ago, announced Saturday that she will seek a full term in office.
The longtime community activist said she made the decision knowing that in coming months the council will have to deal with some harsh economic challenges. She said many families already have been forced to curtail spending.
"We must begin to tighten the money belt of government as well," Williams said. "It's going to be very difficult. I think we're going to have to prioritize.
"I think we're going to have to sit down and look at all areas, but we must maintain public safety. Public safety is huge for me.... It's going to be very difficult."
Williams, 59, a former middle school teacher and administrator, said youths and seniors also are among her top priorities.
She said youths must be given opportunities to succeed and eventually lead the city. She said she wants to make sure seniors aren't denied health care.
Williams also said she thinks the city is on the right track in its efforts to build a vibrant downtown.
"I think '09 is going to be a great year to look for opportunities for Wichita," she said.
Williams, a graduate of Heights High School and Emporia State University, said a desire to see neighborhoods improve and thrive steered her toward politics. She said she's seen many successes over the years.
"We had blight issues; we had street repair issues; we had sidewalk issues," she said. "I wanted to address those concerns. We're not there yet, but we're getting there."
Williams took office in June 2007, filling the vacancy created when council member Carl Brewer became mayor.
The only other announced candidate for District 1, which covers north-central and northeast Wichita, is James Barfield, a host on KCTU Channel 5's River City Forum and a longtime observer of city politics.
