— A dump truck rammed into a car at a traffic light on Thursday, sending them both into a nearby lake, submerging the car and killing its driver, police said. The dump truck's driver was injured.

The vehicles wound up in Colonial Lake with the truck on top of the submerged car, Lawrence police Lt. Charles Edgar said.

The truck hit the car on an inside lane of a four-lane roadway, pushing it more than 200 feet from an intersection into a park and then into the lake, police said.

It took about two hours for a tow truck to remove the dump truck from the water. Inside the badly damaged car was the body of its driver, whose identity wasn't immediately revealed.

A coroner removed a body from the scene on Thursday evening.

The dump truck and the car didn't have any passengers, but initially police didn't know how many people were in the vehicles. At least four divers went into the water to try to help in the rescue operation.

The dump truck's driver was conscious and alert at the scene and was taken to a hospital.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, and there was no immediate word on potential criminal charges.
